ABOUT THE PAINTING
Josephine Baker- entertainer, activist, and decorated war hero, decorated Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur by Charles de Gaulle. She fought racial injustices throughout her life and refused to perform to segregated audiences, wanting to integrate mixed audiences in live entertainment shows. She was offered unofficial leadership in the movement in the United States following Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination but declined out of concern for the welfare of her children. Throughout her career, she adopted 13 children from various countries. She called her family “the rainbow tribe” and took her children on the road aiming to show that racial and cultural harmony could exist.
